How to type part 1: interaction styles and introvert vs extrovert observations
In this blog I will go over interaction styles as a form of typing (interaction styles from Linda Berens). It is by far the quickest and most straight forward way to type. I will then post videos demonstrating these interaction styles.
If you can ask yourself, “does this person move and talk quickly or slowly the majority of the time” you can narrow the types down in half already. Just with your eyes and knowing nothing about MBTI or functions. From there you ask yourself, is this an extrovert or introvert? If you can answer this question you narrow it down by a half again.
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW (for now)
1. does this person move and talk fast or slow?
2. does this person start new threads when speaking or
interrupt when listening (extrovert) or do they stick to the topic when
speaking and not interrupt when listening (introvert)?
JUST THOSE TWO observations narrows it down to 4 out of 16
types.
So here we go:
1. Extroverted traits to observe: initiate
conversation, start new threads, and interrupt or interject when someone else
is speaking.
2. Introverted traits to observe: they do
not speak when others are speaking and they tend to stick to one topic at a
time no matter for how long they speak. They will answer the question, then stop talking once it is answered and wait for the next question to be asked.
3. Control interaction style: deliberate
in movement and speech. This makes them
speak slowly and move slowly. When sitting, they sit still for the most part.
4. Movement interaction style: not
deliberate in movement or speech. This makes
them move and speak more quickly or fluidly. They may speak as they are thinking and they also may move around while sitting.
O
Putting it together
Extroverted Control
types: ESTJ, ESTP, ENTJ, ENFJ
Everything is deliberate and they do not move or speak until they know how to say what they intend. They do not move until they know where they are going.
They will also initiate conversation, start new threads, and may interrupt or interject when someone else is speaking.
Extroverted Movement
types: ESFJ, ESFP, ENTP, ENFP
These types are quick in speech and movement (almost impatient). They will likely not sit still in their
chairs or if standing in line may sway side to side. That is movement. They also are less deliberate with their
words and will be the type to try and fill in the quiet space with any words at
all. They also tend to interrupt or interject much more than their control style counterparts as they are extroverted but also geared towards movement and so do not wait.
Introvert Control types: ISFJ, ISFP, INTP, INFP
These types are slow and deliberate in speech and movement. They take their time. As introverts they will not speak while another person is speaking and when asked a question they will answer that question and stop speaking once it is answered.
Introvert Movement
types: ISTJ, ISTP, INTJ, INFJ
These types are quick in movement and speech and will stay quiet for most of the time unless they are answering a
question after which they will stop talking.
*Possible exceptions to the rules to take into consideration!*
ENTPs and INFJs are the ones to watch out for. ENTPs might come off as introverts at
times. It is not unusual for them to not
speak and be in the background. They are
the most introverted of the extroverts.
Take this into consideration that it might be them, then notice (if in
person) if they start to initiate new threads when engaging them in
conversation. They are true extroverts
that feed off of the energy of people around them and are focused outward.
INFJs on the other hand, may come off as extroverts at
times. They are the most extroverted of
the introverts and enjoy conversation with others. If you catch them the right moment, they will
seem incredibly extroverted without them realizing it. They are true
introverts however, and need to charge their mental battery in solitude and are very
introspective types. This may cause some
confusion when dealing with them as they might seem like extroverts when you
meet them only to be ghosted by them later. This is just due to their need for much introspection even though they are talkative.
Both ENTPs and INFJs will be more tricky in this way when first getting to know the types. Two people that come to mind which are like this are ENTP Kendrick
Lamar and INFJ Alicia Keys.
These are two examples of ENTPs as the most introverted of the extroverts and INFJs as the most extroverted of the introverts.
Now here is a video of each of the types to observe. Jump around between categories and observe just these two things for now 1. fast/slow and 2. interrupts/stops speaking. see the introvert control vs extrovert control to pin point both extroversion/introversion and also introvert movement / extrovert movement. then of course do the same with control: compare extrovert control vs extrovert movement. However you like. Watch all videos in each group or mix it up. Just observe!
Control style Extroverts: observe 1. slow deliberate movements (control) and 2. initiating threads and interjecting at times (extroversion).
ESTJ Busta Rhymes:
ESTP Mike Tyson:
ENTJ Axl Rose:
ENFJ 50 Cent:
Movement style Extroverts: 1. observe quicker speech and fidgeting (movement) etc and 2. interruptions when listening or introducing new threads (extroversion). They tend to interrupt moreso than their control counterparts due to being quick moving and less deliberate.
ESFJ Ariana Grande
ESFP Miguel
ENTP Russel Brand
ENFP Will Smith
Movement style Introverts: 1. quick speech and doesn't sit still physically (movement), 2. answers questions then stops speaking (introvert).
ISTJ Tyler the Creator
ISTP Billie Eilish
INTJ Post Malone
INFJ Marina Diamandis
Control Style Introverts: Again observe 1. Slow in speech and deliberate yet 2. doesn't interrupt or instigate new topics. Stops speaking after answering the questions.
ISFJ Jeff Goldblum
ISFP Usher
INTP Elon Musk
INFP Keanu Reeves (INFPs can come off as movement at times because of Fi hero "yay". But in person they do take there time and given more exposure, you will see they really do take their time with things. They can be quite serious.)
So as you can see, just observing these two categories can narrow it down for you drastically and very quickly without knowing anything about functions. I will follow with how to pin point from here in another blog. For now, put this to practice and enjoy these new findings.
